Riots, extremism and violence
About riots, extremism and violence
It appears that radical groups of extreme leftists are allegedly involved in the riots of the last few days. Wow, man, what an investigative shrewdness! worthy of the legendary detective Conan, at least.
Every time riots break out it seems like the first time. Actually, it’s always the same old story. And the most violent ones are, at the very least, the same ones or with similar profiles.
It is obvious that the police have to do their job and investigate down to the last detail, of course. But this does not mean that public opinion has to be overturned on this. It leads nowhere. And the conclusions, more or less, are always the same. What we should perhaps ask ourselves is why do the violent people choose the moments they do? Why don’t they break shop windows and burn containers on any given weekend? Why do they choose the dates they do?
Without any data at hand and based on pure intuition, we can imagine that, both on the side of the police riot squad and on the side of the violent demonstrators, there is a few who are addicted to risky sports. We are referring to people who, day in and day out, prepare themselves in gyms and by reading specialized web pages for this type of situation. It is street violence understood as a stimulating exercise. In fact, they understand this “sport” as the very essence of their existence. No doubt, sharp researchers could start this line of investigation.
The other side, obviously, would be political one. Violent people want to create a certain effect on public opinion, which benefits their interests. Making noise, breaking things and stealing in a violent way are actions that always have a strong impact on the media. This would allow them to amplify their protest message.
On the other hand, some police officers with a clear ideological bias have a natural vocation to beat up radicals, as much as possible. The latter would be a real cancer of society, from their point of view. In this sense, they would devote themselves, at the time of the demonstrations, to visually scan the “mass”, detect elements that could be beaten and would act in an expeditious manner, without even the need for prior provocation.
These two groups, which, under normal conditions, are clearly in the minority and repel each other, manage to drag the rest of the demonstrators and the police into a whirlpool of confusion, adrenaline and rushes, which end up provoking all kinds of excesses and fatal accidents.
But for the spark to ignite and spread to all the people gathered, the atmosphere must be heated from the start. In a peaceful and festive demonstration, these types of elements are more easily detectable and are quickly isolated from the rest and, therefore, neutralized.
That is why the when and why are essential to anticipate and prevent these situations. In fact, the last two “seasons” of riots that we have had to suffer, have happened as a result of highly questionable trials and imprisonments. Normally, when these types of events occur, there is an initial moment of embarrassment. Then comes indignation. And this leads to the call for rallies of all kinds.
If the issue becomes serious enough, the demonstration heats up, the shouting becomes louder, etc. This is the moment that the violent ones will take advantage of, in order to start acting. In this case, there will be no neutralization, since the violent action in particular will be perceived as an overflow of the rage of the majority. This will cause others, non-violent in principle, to join the destructive tumult, making it much more difficult to detect the born “sportsmen”.
The other reason for taking advantage of moments of indignation to act violently is the political gain that the vandals end up making in the end. Although the majority of society rejects violent actions, there is a non-negligible part of it that, in silence, enjoys a kind of social revenge. In some cases, they don’t even need to go out on the street. At home, curled up on the sofa, they contemplate with joy the images of hatred and chaos with a secret feeling of satisfaction, of having been avenged for all the injustices suffered, whether or not they have to do with the specific demands of the moment. And this will make them begin to sympathize seriously with these radical political options.
